Athens is the capital of Greece and was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The city itself is beautiful. Although this capital is similar to other capitals, it is unique with its Acropolis and its Parthenon Temple. Athens is built around the Acropolis, which dominates the landscape. The entrance to the Acropolis is the Propylea, which reaches 150 feet and borders the temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon, one of the most magnificent monuments in the world, stands with stately elegance after all these years on the highest part of the Acropolis as it overlooks the busy town. It was constructed between 447 and 437 B.C., and mirrors the values of the Athenian State at the time. The Acropolis Hill of Athens serves as a reminder that Athens was, at one time, the greatest civilization on earth. Also referred to as the “Sacred Rock”, the Acropolis Hill can be viewed from nearly every part of Athens.
