Mountains enclose the city of Athens: Aigaleo to the west, Hymettus to the east, Pentelikon to the northeast, and Parnes to the north. Both the surrounding mountains and the plain on which the city lies contain limestone. Athens is on the Ilissus River, which is dry the majority of the year until after the winter storms arrive. Athens has a normal Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and hot, dry summers. Throughout the year, temperatures in Athens average at 32° Celsius in the summer and 12° Celsius in the winter. The city does not see much rainfall with an average annual rainfall of 406 millemeters.
