The biggest draws to Potsdam are its palaces and parks. These beautiful sights take visitors back to when Potsdam was the summer residents of Prussian kings.
Sanssouci Palace and Park, built by Frederick the Great, are the crowning glory in this magnificent collection. Potsdam’s reputation as a lively center of culture and learning is enhanced by its architecture and historical districts.
Tourists can observe the best of Potsdam’s architecture in the residential area of Neubabelsberg in Babelsberg, Potsdam's largest district. Here mansions by Muthesius, Mies van der Rohe and Grenander, were used as by Truman, Churchill and Stalin. Traces of Ufa studio stars such as Marlene Dietrich also remain. The border between East and West Germany ran through Babelsberg and down the middle of the Glienicker Bridge which became famous as the place where spies exchanged information during the Cold War.
For a little different supper, try Luisa Seconda, a café and restaurant that will make you feel like you took a quite detour to Italy. Enjoy the rustic Italian cuisine, home-made pasta, stone-baked pizza and fine wines served in candlelit ambience with a definite Mediterranean flair.
