Day 2 - Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main is a wonderful place to start your trip in Germany. It will really give you an overview of what the country is all about. In Frankfurt you’ll find many contradictions. You’ll see historic vs. modern. You’ll see quite and tranquil vs. big-city hustle and bustle. You’ll see big business vs. big fun and culture. All of these things live harmoniously in this cosmopolitan city.

Frankfurt is one of the most important financial centers in the world. It also hosts the International Motor Show (IAA) and the International Book Fair.

There are many key places of interest in Frankfurt. The Goethe House, the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, will give you insight into what upper-middle class life was like in the mid-18th century. St. Paul's Church has perhaps played the greatest historical role of all of Frankfurt’s buildings. This is where Germany's first freely elected parliament met in 1848. Römerberg square and the old town hall, known as the "Römer," are the heart of the old quarter. Chances are if you’ve seen a picture from Frankfurt in a travel book, it was of Römer. This old city center with its magnificent half-timbered buildings was rebuilt in 1986.

Visit Adolf Wagner for a German dinner. In this Sachsenhausen restaurant, typical regional specialties such as Handkäs or Schneegestöber (specially prepared Camembert) are served along with Äppler, the local cider. The Wagner has a long tradition, and the decor is appropriately rustic.
