» Trip Three - Munich
"Munich nestles between art and beer like a village between hills." Originally written by Heinrich Heine some 150 years ago, these words remain true today. With the oktoberfest and opera, Hofbräuhaus beer hall and Pinakothek art galleries, BMW and Bayern Munich, the city manages to marry old Bavarian tradition with vibrant modern life. It really is a city dream come true.
Day One – Places of Interest
Use your first day in town to see some of Munich’s top attractions. Here are some to choose from:
With its onion domes, which are clearly visible from afar, the Gothic Church of Our Lady is an unmistakable Munich landmark. The building has two high towers and offers a remarkable panoramic view of Munich and the nearby Alps. Inside, the church is impressively simplistic in its design.
Hofbräuhaus beer hall is Munich's most popular attraction and the city's best known drinking establishment, not to mention the one most frequently celebrated in song. Every day, around 10,000 liters of beer are served in the taproom, restaurant, banqueting hall and beer garden.
A large number of World and European records have been broken at Olympic Stadium. This stadium sees record numbers of visitors, as well. It is also an outstanding example of how spectacular architectural form and function can be successfully combined. The stadium is used as a venue for sporting highlights as well as open-air festivals, playing host to the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi and Robbie Williams.
Day Two – Shopping, the Outdoors and the Opera
Maximilianstrasse is the place to go luxury and glamour in Munich. This famous boulevard is lined with exclusive designer shops including Gucci, Armani and Yves St. Laurent. Even if you are visiting Munich on a tight budget, this exclusive shopping district is still worth a visit just for window shopping.
In the afternoon, visit the Nymphenburg palace and grounds. This baroque palace with its extensive grounds was built as a summer residence for the Bavarian electors. In addition to the extensive palace buildings, this impressive courtly baroque ensemble houses a number of important collections. With its numerous waterways and secret castles, the park is a great place to explore.
Tonight, catch a show at the Bavarian State Opera. This opera’s the musical direction in the hands of the great conductor, Zubin Mehta, who successfully combines great respect for tradition with a forward-looking approach. The highlight of the season is always provided by the Munich opera festival. Seasonal highlights are shown for a whole month.
Day Three - Neuschwanstein Castle
When building his favorite castle in the 19th century, King Ludwig II was inspired by the music and operatic works of Richard Wagner. Later, this fairytale castle became the model for the palace in the Disney cartoon "Cinderella." Today, it is considered to be one of Germany's most beautiful and famous castles.
