1) Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with its regional capital of Schwerin, lies in the north-east of Germany and features the largest contiguous area of waterways in Central Europe. The terminal moraine of the last ice age runs across Mecklenburg, from north-west to south-east, from Wismar to the Feldberg lakes and into the eastern Brandenburg region. This landscape consists of broad meadows and fields, as well as extensive areas of forests and lakes.

2) North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia, with its state capital Düsseldorf, is the most densely populated federal state in Germany. This state is a leading industrial region, an important international economic center and a modern center of technology. It is also a cultural and media base. With iron and steel, and companies like Thyssen and Krupp, Germany's economic success story was forged here, bringing work and wealth to thousands.

3) Rhineland-Palatinate
A federal state unlike any other, Rhineland-Palatinate has a culture as rich and varied as the history that shaped it. Rhineland-Palatinate lies in the west of Germany, amidst the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The state capital is Mainz. Contrasts are what give this region its own unique charm: the idyllic river scenery and the unspoiled mountains, the historical towns and picturesque villages, the famous wine regions and the romantic castles.

4) Saarland
Saarland, the smallest of Germany's federal states, borders France and Luxembourg. Its Völklingen Ironworks UNESCO world heritage site is the most popular cultural attraction. The regional capital, Saarbrücken, lies on the banks of the Saar, directly on the French border. The town itself and the countryside that surrounds it have a checkered and interesting past. The fascinating contrasts are what give this region its own unique charm. The River Saar is the lifeblood that runs through the region and where the state got its name.
