Frankfurt am Main will give you a good overview of what Germany is all about. In Frankfurt you’ll find many contradictions. You’ll see historic vs. modern. You’ll see quiet and tranquil vs. big-city hustle and bustle. You’ll see serious business vs. fun and culture. All of these things live harmoniously in this cosmopolitan city.
There are many key places of interest in Frankfurt. The Goethe House, the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, will give you insight into what upper-middle class life was like in the mid-18th century. St. Paul's Church has perhaps played the greatest historical role of all of Frankfurt’s buildings. This is where Germany's first freely elected parliament met in 1848. Römerberg square and the old town hall, known as the "Römer," are the heart of the old quarter. Chances are if you’ve seen a picture from Frankfurt in a travel book, it was of Römer. This old city center with its magnificent half-timbered buildings was rebuilt in 1986.
