Having found a place to lay your head and a restaurant or two to fill your belly, you are ready to hit the town and see the sights. One of the great things about Savannah is how easy it is to navigate. The squares provide a great system for figuring out just where you are at any given time, plus it means you are never more than a block or two away from a shady tree and a park bench.
An easy place to begin is the Savannah Visitor Center. You can pick up a free map and hop next door to visit the Savannah History Museum. After that, just hit the Historic District and start walking. Many of the homes have tours available, and one of the best is the Green-Meldrim Home on Madison Square. This gothic-style home became Sherman’s headquarters after his arrival in Savannah.
The Telfair Mansion and Art Museum is the oldest public art museum in the South, and it is also home to the famous “Bird Girl” statue that dons the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. You will see replicas of this statue up and down the streets of Savannah, but this one is the real thing. Savannah also has many historic churches, many of which offer free or self-guided tours.
River Street is a tourist area fun for shopping and strolling, but it is probably the most commercial part of Savannah. You will have a more authentic and unique experience if you spend your time exploring the side streets and chatting with locals.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has created a tourism cottage industry for Savannah, and there is everything from walking tours to carriage rides that will show you the various sites from the book. You will have to take a car to see one of the best, however: Bonaventure Cemetery. Located a few miles outside of town, you will not find a more beautifully spooky place on earth. Filled with elaborate gravestones and monuments, you can idle away an entire day trying to imagine all the stories behind the carved names.
On a much more carefree note, Savannah is also close to the beach. Tybee Island is only fourteen miles away if you want to include some sun and surf in your trip. There are plenty of places to stop in for oysters and shrimp along the way.
