Adding a second day to your visit to Atlanta allows you to pick up a few extra sites and to slow down just a little. Instead of just adding sites, however, we suggest rearranging your itinerary so that you spend one entire day in the heart of downtown and another day on the fringes of the downtown area.
If you are staying away from downtown, catch a cab or hop on MARTA in the morning and head straight for the CNN Center. Try to catch one of the day’s first tours, which is around 9:00 A.M. Each tour lasts approximately one hour, so even if you stop by the gift shop, you should be out by 11:00. Then, stroll over to Centennial Olympic Park. Grab a sandwich, relax, and people watch for a while. You’ll see businessmen on lunch break, teenagers on skateboarders, and tourists with their guidebooks. Take a seat by the fountains and wait for the water display, which occurs regularly.
After this short break, stay downtown and head to the brand new (in 2006) Georgia Aquarium. The new aquarium is the world’s largest, and children and adults alike will love checking out the fish and underwater mammals. You can easily spend the afternoon there. If you still have energy after the aquarium, you could stay downtown for a basketball or hockey game, or head to Midtown for a Fox Theater show. Alternatively, find one of the nice restaurants downtown, have a relaxing dinner, and then head back to the hotel.
On day two, head over to the Martin Luther King, Jr., sites on Auburn Avenue, and spend the morning immersing yourself in civil rights history. Have some southern food for lunch on Auburn Avenue, but don’t have too much to drink because next you’re heading to the World of Coca-Cola.
Assuming you get out of the World of Coca-Cola by 4:30 or so, stay in the area and visit Underground Atlanta. This is a neat little underground mall where you can find any Atlanta souvenirs you might want. Around 6:30, catch the shuttle bus to Turner Field, just in time for the 7:05 first pitch of the Braves game. Get a hot dog at the game and cheer for Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, and crew.
Prices will again depend on your eating and transportation choices, but this two-day trip might cost $75-$125, plus souvenirs, show tickets, and lodging. Also, keep in mind that World of Coca-Cola is scheduled to move downtown in 2006, so that might change your schedule somewhat.
