Atlanta in One Day

You only have one day, so we’re going to be moving quickly. Use your hotel’s continental breakfast or, if you’re near Little Five Points, head to the Flying Biscuit Café early for breakfast. Then walk or ride MARTA downtown and walk to Auburn Avenue, which can easily take fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on your MARTA stop.

You’ll spend your morning on Auburn Avenue exploring the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site. The museum has exhibits displaying the history of the civil rights movement and King’s role in it, while the King Center highlights some of his philosophical influences and ideas. The highlight of the morning, however, might very well be sitting in a pew at Ebenezer Baptist Church and listening to recordings of speeches and sermons by the great orator. Just down the street, you’ll find King’s boyhood home, which is also open to the public.

Grab a quick bite of authentic southern food on Auburn Avenue and then return downtown on MARTA. Assuming you’re finished with the King sites by 1:30, you’ll still have two to three hours at either the World of Coca-Cola or the CNN Center.

Both sites are interesting and both cost about the same amount, so simply choose which site seems more interesting. The World of Coca-Cola offers the tasting room, an old-fashioned soda fountain, and an excellent recounting of the history of Coke. The CNN Center, on the other hand, gives you a fun behind-the-scenes look at presenting the news. You won’t, unfortunately, have time for both. The CNN Center probably takes less time, so if you’re tired, choose that option and rest at Centennial Olympic Park next door with your extra time.

After you finish with either Coke or CNN, take MARTA towards Midtown. Hopefully, you’ll be able to catch a show at Fox Theater or at the Woodruff Arts Center. At any rate, you can get dinner in Midtown, perhaps at a character-filled spot such as Fat Matt’s Rib Shack, and browse some of the shops.

Depending on how much you spend on transportation and meals, this day will likely cost forty to sixty dollars. That number, however, does not include your hotel bill or a show, if you choose to see one.
