For the most part, if you want to find economical lodging in Atlanta, you will need to stay on the outskirts of town. Fortunately, the inconvenience of staying on the outskirts need not be a major problem. Airport hotels often have a shuttle to the airport’s MARTA stop, and if you have a car, you can drive downtown and park in one of the city’s many garages for the day.
Several of the best budget hotels are in the area called the Perimeter, which is on the edges of 1-285, the beltway around the city. The Clarion Suites, for example, is near Six Flags and Six Flags—White Water. There is also an AmeriSuites on the Perimeter that offers a shuttle to nearby areas, and a Hampton Inn, which, like all Hampton Inns, offers basic clean rooms. If you move beyond the Perimeter, you can find even more budget hotels in suburbs, such as Decatur and Alpharetta.
Although most of the budget hotels are on the outskirts of town, there are several a few good finds in some of the more popular areas of town. In Downtown, check out the Travelodge, and in Midtown look into the Residence Inn. Finally, La Quinta Inn and Suites in Vinings is close to Buckhead and is a good deal. If you want to stay near the airport, check out the Howard Johnson Express, which is one of the many hotels that offer an airport shuttle. Keep in mind that downtown budget hotels are not as cheap as budget hotels on the perimeter, but they are much cheaper than the top-flight hotels downtown.
