There may well be hundreds of genealogy societies dedicated to the people related to historical events such as the Civil War. These groups focus their efforts not only on the family history research of the descendants of those involved, but also on the political, religious and cultural events surrounding the event that created it, shaped it, and caused it to end. A short list of these types of genealogy societies include, but is certainly not limited to:
• Sons of Confederate Veterans
• The Mayflower Society
• Daughters of the American Revolution
• National Society United States Daughters of 1812
• National Society Daughters of the American Colonists
• Daughters of the Republic of Texas
• United Daughters of the Confederacy
• National Organization of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War
Many of these organizations manage information about these events, the people involved at the time, the people who are descended from the original participants, as well as those who study, enjoy and even reenact the events, battles, and historical happenings.
Like the religious and ethnically focused genealogy societies, the groups that focus on historical events are not isolated within a geographic border. However, these societies may focus on a certain region or part of the country. By pooling their resources, these groups can put members in contact with other members, create periodicals to disseminate information, and to build local repositories of related information for others to share.
