Whether one or more of your ancestors were Polish, Slovenian, Czechoslovakian, Irish, French, Hispanic, African American, or any other ethnic group, there is probably at least one genealogy society dedicated to helping genealogists find their ancestral roots that are associated with that group. Ethnicity groups are extremely valuable to genealogists whose ancestors experienced periods of intense migration or relocation, such as American Indians in the early days of the United States, Jewish people around the time of World War II, and Irish people during the Irish Potato Famine.

Genealogy societies that are formed to serve the needs of one culture group transcend the boundaries of cities, counties and states. They are able to reach beyond borders to embrace the culture, important events, and movements of a people from place to place. Because Irish immigrants eventually moved into every corner of the United States, their descendants can conduct research with the help of an Irish American genealogy society and discover a wealth of information they might never have found by focusing only on the North East part of the United States.

In addition to ethnic and cultural group societies, there are also societies dedicated to significant historical events, such as the American Depression, the French Revolution, and the Spanish American War. These Historical and Genealogical societies are helpful to researchers whose ancestors were affected by these events by focusing their time, energy and resources on the collection and sharing of information about those events. Even though their focus may seem narrow, the truth is that these events affected so many people that their ancestors (who are even more numerous) are now working to discover what their past family members experienced. In discovering some of how they lived, the descendants can begin to "know" them a little better.
