There are basically three materials used to make poker chips.

The cheapest material is plastic. Plastic chips are best for players who only play every now and then. Sets can be bought from $10 to $30.

The second material used is mother-of-pearl – these chips are also known as “plaques.” These chips are the ones seen in James Bond films and in continental casinos. These chips are slightly more expensive, running from $15 to $100.

The third and most popular type of chips is clay chips. This is the material American and British casinos use. Clay chips are not actually made of clay. Most are made from ABS plastics and have a metal insert that add weight to the chips.

Recently, a new type of chip – Nexgen chips – has hit the market. These are a combination of a clay composite material but also with a metal insert to add weight like the clay chips.

Each of these types of chips are available alone or in sets that come complete with cases, cards, dice and other related products.
