Although no one knows for sure who the first inventor of cotton candy was, some say it was William Morrison and John Wharton. These candy makers from Nashville invented the sugary treat back in 1897. They invented a machine that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it, and patented it in 1899 as the device that created “Fairy Floss”. They introduced their invention at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair and sold about 68,655 boxes for a quarter a piece.

Others speculate that the creator of cotton candy was Thomas Patton. In 1900, Patton received a patent for his gas-fired rotating plate to spin cotton candy threads. He introduced his invention that same year at the Ringling Bros. Circus. During that same time, Josef Delarose Lascaux , a Louisiana dentist strangely enough, introduced his version of cotton candy at his dental practice. However, he never received a patent.

The earliest cotton candy machines were often unreliable. Some broke easily, and others made loud rattling sounds. However, in 1949, Gold Medal Products revolutionized the cotton candy making industry with the invention of the more reliable spring base model.
