A stun gun is relatively easy to use, but you should still practice if you plan on using a gun. Keeping your hand away from the prongs, depress the trigger to ignite the electric charge. The charge will continue as long as you depress the trigger.

When you are actually using your stun gun, ignite the charge and then touch the contact prongs to the attacker. The gun will work on any part of the person’s body, but shocks to muscular areas on the torso (e.g. the buttocks or the shoulder) will be especially effective because they will immobilize the entire body. Continue applying the charge until you can get free; most stun gun manufacturers say that it takes up to five seconds to immobilize an attacker, depending on the voltage of your gun and the size of the attacker.

On the other hand, when you are merely practicing with your stun gun, do not hold down the trigger for lengthy periods, as a prolonged empty charge can damage the prongs. After you have released the trigger, touch it to something metal to discharge the prongs; otherwise, you might accidentally shock yourself later.

Hopefully, you will never have to use your stun gun, but if you feel that you may need it, store it in a safe but accessible location. Many women carry their stun guns in their purse while security personnel often wear theirs on a belt clip. Wherever you keep your stun gun, make absolutely sure that it is out of the reach of children.
