Stun guns are only one of a wide variety of self-defense and/or electric shock mechanisms on the market. Here are four alternatives:
• Pepper Spray—Unlike a stun gun, you can use pepper spray without needing to physically touch your attacker, but pepper spray only works when you spray it in the face.
• Stun Baton—Police officers regularly carry these batons, though they’re too big for most civilians to carry. Like a stun gun, a stun baton has two prongs at the top that contain an electric charge. In addition, however, the top six inches of the baton are charged so that if your attacker tries to grab the baton, he is shocked.
• Taser—A taser is actually more of a gun than is a stun gun. The taser fires darts that trail an electric cable back to the handset. When the dart strikes an individual, the attacker receives a charge similar to that of a stun gun. A taser works up to approximately twenty feet and also has prongs that act as a typical stun gun, but the firing cartridges are expensive and can only be used once.
• Handgun—Handguns are too often offensive weapons rather than defensive weapons. They are many times more dangerous than stun guns and are often illegal.
Each of these weapons is both dangerous and effective in their own way. Compare your alternatives, but be absolutely sure you can use the mechanism safely before you purchase it.
