The iRobot Roomba is the cheapest robotic vacuum at $100 to $300. However, it does not work effectively on deep pile carpet, and it cleans at random using infrared sensors, so you often have areas left unvacuumed.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Electrolux Trilobite. The Trilobite is expensive ($1800), but it is very effective. Unlike the Roomba, it maps the rooms and uses ultrasonic sensors so that it rarely misses areas. In addition, it is stronger than the Roomba and can work on even deep-pile carpet.

In between these two models is a wide range of options. The Samsung Robotic Vacuum maps the room like the Electrolux, but the Samsung also has a built-in camera and can be controlled via the Internet. The Sharper Image eVac, on the other hand, does not have the traditional flat disc look, but rather has five-inch wheels that help it move over any small obstacles. The Karcher RC3000 has reduced charging time and disposes of its own dirt. The Robomaxx, Lentek Intellivace, FloorBot, and Black and Decker Zoombot are all additional alternatives.

When you are deciding between robotic vacuums, consider the features that are important to you. Air purification or easily replaceable air filters are nice options while a remote control and a scheduler are fairly standard features that make the vacuum even more convenient. If you are planning to use a robotic vacuum primarily to supplement traditional vacuuming, go with an inexpensive model. On the other hand, if the robot will be your only cleaner, make sure you’ll be happy with a model’s cleaning power.
