"Attention folks. Attention." If you have ever been to a large group event then you have heard this message coming across through the large speakers near your ears. The PA, or Public Address, system has revolutionized the ability to get people's attention much quicker than the old days. It has also saved lots of people's voices. The PA system has allowed you to play songs at your wedding for the dancing wedding party. The PA system has allowed you to order a pack of nuggets without walking inside McDonalds. The PA system has saved the lives of people that wouldn't have realized their building was on fire until it was too late.

This may be your first time hearing about a PA system but I'm sure that you have heard them called by other names. How about the sound system or the speaker thing? Both of those names carry a lot of weight in the world of getting your voice out there. But do you truly understand what goes into a PA system? The first thing to understand is the different components that make up every single PA system. The second thing is to understand how to buy a PA system and what are the major brands associated with sound systems. The following important idea is to see who and where these sound systems are being employed. And finally how PA systems have become intercom systems in many of our daily lives.

There are four major parts of every PA system. The first part is the microphone. A microphone is sometimes referred to as a mic or mike. This starts out the process of moving your voice to the ears of the people that can't hear you through your normal voice. There are going to be many different kinds of microphone, but the ones that you are probably going to be using 3 major ones - a handheld-corded microphone, a lapel microphone, and a handheld wireless microphone. There are other kinds of microphone but these are going to be major ones with the handheld-corded microphone being the most common. The next part of the PA system is the mixer or soundboard. The electronic signal moves from the microphone through a microphone cord and into one of the inputs on the mixer. At this point there are many options. Some soundboards consist of just a volume control, while others allow you to change the EQ of the voice or hundreds of other possibilities.

From this point the electronic signal heads from the mixer to the output - the speakers. Once again you will have a wide variety of speakers, but most people will simple get just good enough to make their voice go far enough for their needs. Speakers come active or passive in electrical needs. Passive speakers are the most common but active speakers allow for you not to have an amplifier because it is located inside the speaker. That is the fourth part of the PA system, the amplifier. Running from speaker is an amplifier. This is simply your power source. You can just run a cord from an outlet to your speakers if your speakers happen to be passive because the power needs to be conditioned and made into something that sound can use. That is what the amplifier does. It also makes sure that speakers get the right amount of power for the sound and not too much or too little - otherwise the amp will shut off.

This can be an incredibly hard process for someone that doesn't have much knowledge in the area of sound, but there is some information that if you know ahead of time will make it much easier. The first is to know how much you want to spend. PA systems run anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars - quite the range, so know how much you want to fork over before you walk in the store and see what the state of the art speakers can really do. The second thing is to know how large of an area you want to interact with. If the sound system is supposed to be used in a larger room and not moved then you probably won't need the best sound system because sound fills a room very quickly. However, if you are planning on transporting this sound system around and possibly using it outside then you may want to push for something with a little more power. You want to error on the side of having too much power when buying a sound system if you can help it. And the third thing to know when buying a sound system is what you are going to use it for. If it is just to make public announcements then the mixer isn't really important - maybe a mute button and a fader switch for the adjustment of volume would be fine. However, if you are planning on using this for instrumental or vocal performance you at least need to look into getting one with 3 Equalization channels on the board and probably one with more than two channels to plug in.

Most of the brands of sound systems are alike. Some are a little better, but for the most part you are looking for what you want in the price range that you want. Don't just go for the more expensive because it has the name Bose on it. Most of the brands are great. Some of the quality sound system brands are: Bose, Yamaha, Crown, Mackie, Behringer, JBL, Shure, and Audio-Technica.
Some of the people that often use a PA system are DJ's, concert bands, bingo announcers, and auctioneers. Obviously there is no certain person that needs a PA system. Anytime that you step outside or into a larger room that your voice needs amplification then you are a person that needs a PA system. Some of the common places that you will also find PA systems are concert halls, banquet rooms, church sanctuaries, outdoor festivals, radio station on sites, and anything else where announcements are a must. This topic is kind of easy to answer because in today's time almost anywhere with over 50 people will need a PA system of some kind.

One of the most popular and needed places for using PA systems is in enclosed areas that need to tell messages to all the employees or students at the same time. This is called an Intercom system. If you are inside a business, half the time if you look up directly you will see a speaker. Corporations will use an intercom system to tell employees about upcoming meetings, as well as inform employees about any possible emergencies that may be coming up. Schools also use intercom systems for morning announcements for the national anthem and daily students announcements. Schools have also wanted to get a intercom system into school buildings because of emergencies such as hostage situations and any others that may place the students' lives into danger.

Another place that you may see an intercom at is your local Burger King. The intercom system has changed the fast food industry forever. You can now drive through and hear the voice of someone working inside telling you that you need to pull up to the next window. You will also see this intercom system used in locked door apartment complexes. Through this you can actually select whom you want to talk to up in their apartment. Combine this with the possibility of being able to "ring" someone in - let them in from your apartment and you have a great combination for the modern man. Intercom systems can also been seen at chic shops in Beverly Hills and in the large homes of people that want to contact someone from room to room without raising their voice to a yell.

BBs are the ammunition used in BB guns. They are tiny, lead shot projectiles in the shape of a sphere. The name BB comes from the size of the ammunition, which is usually .177 caliber or 4.5 millimeter. The sizes of lead shot used in shotgun shells were B, BB, and BBB. This middle sized piece of ammunition in what gave the gun its name.

BB guns also use another type of ammunition, called pellets. Pellets are shaped pieces of lead, sometimes with a point at one end, sometimes hollow tipped. They generally have a flared back so as to engage the grooves inside the barrel of the gun and give stability when fired. Another type of ammo is the dart. These are especially dangerous, as they have a sharp tipped end, much like the darts which are hand tossed in the game of darts. Darts in BB guns are generally used for target shooting only, and again are especially dangerous.

Contrary to popular belief, BB does not stand for "ball bearing," "Baby bullet," or anything else. It refers simply to the size of the ammo used in these weapons.

Most BB guns have a mechanism attached which utilizes compressed air to force the BB or pellet through the barrel. Some guns have the air previously compressed in a canister of some kind. The most popular are 12 gram carbon dioxide cartridges, which are one time use cartridges. Other BB guns use canisters which can be refilled for multiple uses. In either case, the gas in these canisters is used to force the BB out of the barrel at speeds up to 800 feet per second. The cartridges need to be replaced or refilled fairly often, as peak performance is quickly lost with this type of weapon. These BB guns are generally semi-automatic, meaning you can fire several shots in a row without reloading or stopping for any reason.

Another type of BB gun features a hand pump. Hand pump BB guns compress the air which is already in the environment and then use it to force the BB or pellet out the barrel. These BB guns generally fire a bit more slowly than previously compressed air guns, but they still can reach a maximum speed of about 750 feet per second. These are more economical to use, as you never have to replace or refill any air cartridges, but they do have to be reloaded, unlike the semi-automatic others. To reload, most have a simple bolt action mechanism which usually uses a magnet to grab a BB from an area in the gun in which they are stored. These guns are more useful for firing pellets, however, because pellets can usually be loaded into the bolt action release.

There are a couple other types of BB guns: spring piston and spring rod BB guns. With a spring piston BB gun, a compression spring is attached to a plunger in a pressure chamber. The chamber is much wider than the barrel so the gases in the chamber can be propelled at a greater speed than the spring could produce on its own. When used as a rifle, spring piston guns are incredibly powerful, shooting at speeds of 1000 feet per second or more, and incredibly accurate, often being used for target shooting or to hunt small pests. Spring rod BB guns have a compression spring attached to a simple rod. When the rod is pulled back, the spring compresses and a BB is loaded. This is how you cock this type of gun. When the trigger is pulled, the spring is released, sending the rod rocketing forward. The rod propels the BB out the barrel of the gun. These are the safest type of BB gun and are often pitched to youngsters as their first BB gun, as they reach speeds of only 175 feet per second. (Please keep in mind that this is still a potentially dangerous speed which could cause serious harm.)

In the famous movie "The Christmas Story," the little boy wanted a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas more than anything else. His mother kept telling him he would shoot his eye out if he got one. Of course, he gets his BB gun and promptly shoots himself right in the eye, except his glasses were there to protect his eyes.

While this is a funny story, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, users of BB guns or any other weapons should always be aware of safety precautions. A BB gun could easily shoot out an eye, and honestly it could potentially do much more damage than that. Here are a few safety tips to remember, especially regarding children being around BB guns.

•	Always lock guns away. Guns should be stored in a locked cabinet or other lockable location so children (or any unauthorized person) cannot access them. Hide the key where there is no chance it could be found by your child. Always remember to unload all your guns before you put them away.
•	Store the ammo somewhere else. It is also wise to lock the ammunition, but wherever you store it, make sure it is in a separate location from the gun(s).
•	Use common sense. Never, even jokingly, aim your BB gun at another person. Never turn the barrel toward yourself or look into it. Always point the gun safely in another direction. Teach your children to leave guns alone and to immediately tell an adult if they should find one.
•	Make sure others store guns safely, too. It is vital that you make sure not only that your own guns are stored safely, but that people whose homes you visit (or where your children play) have them stored safely, too.

Follow these and other safety precautions when using BB guns or weapons of any other kind.

BB guns are available at a number of different retail locations. Most large department stores (Wal Mart, K Mart, etc.) have them in their sporting good section. Sports specialty stores like Dick's, REI, and others, also carry them. Usually any place you buy a gun you can also find ammunition and other accessories like targets. You can get both BB pistols and BB rifles.

They range in cost from $15 or so to upwards of $200. Only the highest power models with lots of bells and whistles will sell for those prices, though. If you are seeking a BB gun for recreational purposes only, you should be able to get a fairly powerful and accurate gun, some ammunition, a pack of targets, and even a nice scope for your gun for a grand total of $50-$75.

Shooting BB or pellet guns is an affordable and enjoyable hobby, provided it is practiced with care and precaution. Users should take note of the potential hazards and always use great care when operating these pleasurable but potentially dangerous devices.

Paintball is a relatively new sport which is gaining popularity throughout the world. Players of paintball use guns (or markers) to fire paintballs, which are marble sized projectiles filled with a type of paint, at opposing players. The paintballs, which are coated with a gelatin like substance, explode upon impact, leaving a quarter sized splotch on the opposing player (don't worry, it washes out!) which indicates that player has been eliminated from gameplay.

The first known paintball game took place in 1981 in New Hampshire. The next year the first recreational paintball field was opened in Rochester, New York. As years passed, indoor fields began to open and tournaments, some with lucrative prizes, began to be offered. The 1990s saw the game become international by expanding to Europe, and the game is now played by over 12 million people in the world, making it among the most popular extreme sports in the entire world.

There are literally hundreds of variations of paintball, some of which are significantly more popular than others. There are three games which are particularly popular: Capture the Flag, Center Flag, and Slayer. In Capture the Flag, two teams start on opposite sides and attempt to gain access to the other team's flag, all the while having to protect their own flag. The winning team is the one which takes the other team's flag to the predetermined location, or the team which eliminates (by marking with paint) all the players from the other team. In Center Flag, there is just one flag located in the middle of the field. Both teams try to acquire it and take it to the opposite end of the field. Slayer is a simpler game with a simpler objective: eliminate all the opposing players. Besides those three basic games, there are also a number of types of gameplay.

Woodsball is the original type of paintball gameplay. As you could probably deduce from the name, this type of paintball is played primarily in a wooded area. The area of gameplay is generally large enough for many people to play, sometimes several dozen. Woodsball is held in stark contrast to the other major version, speedball, for a number of reasons. Woodsball games take much more time than speedball games, and the guns used in woodsball do not fire as quickly as the guns used in speedball. Woodsball is more of a strategic, stalking game; stealth is more at a premium than speed. Accuracy is extremely important in woodsball, much more so than in speedball. This is simply because you generally only have one shot to get the opponent you're after, unlike in speedball in which the guns are often semiautomatic and fire through several cycles in just a few seconds. The guns used in paintball are fairly loud, making it even more critical to be accurate with your shot. Simply firing one shot will immediately notify many of your opponents of your location, putting you in danger of being eliminated. This version even utilizes the occasional paintball sniper. Unlike real life snipers, though, paintball snipers' weapons do not have the range needed to fire on an opponent from a very safe distance, so the sniper must use stealth to get near an opponent. Many of the different games can be played in the woodsball genre, with center flag and capture the flag among them.

Speedball is the other major type of paintball. While woodsball is played in large, wide open areas, speedball is played in a much more confined area in an effort to make the game more exciting. Several man made obstacles are placed all over the field. The obstacles, called bunkers, are usually made of some inflatable material, wood pallets, or tires. The field is split in half and the bunkers are placed in mirror images of each other, so as not to give either team an advantage. The guns used in speedball shoot a large number of balls per second (BPS to the experienced paintballer). Slayer is the most popular game played in speedball, although other versions can be played as well. This is the type of paintball that is gaining popularity and is usually played in local leagues and tournaments.

There are a number of other types of paintball with varying popularity. Scenario paintball is generally a large scale game with some theme, like science fiction or war. Many scenario paintball games last several hours, and sometimes even days, and include players dressed up in costumes of their parts in the game. Reball is a type of paintball that, strangely, doesn't use paintballs. The reball is a solid foam ball shaped and sized exactly like a paintball so it can be fired from the same gun. This kind of ammo is useful for indoor play where paint splattered on the walls may not be acceptable, and is also useful for teams which want to practice together, saving them money since they can reuse their ammunition instead of having to buy so many paintballs. There is a variation of reball called v-ball, which uses a Velcro ball instead of the foam ball. X-ball is a newer version of paintball which pits two teams against one another in a series of games of center flag. The game is timed, and whichever team has won the most rounds of center flag when time runs out is declared the winner. Slingshot paintball is just what it sounds like: the typical paintball guns are replaced with slingshots. The main advantage of slingshot paintball is that a slingshot costs far less than a normal paintball gun, making this version of the game far more affordable.
Paintball parks usually have areas for both woodsball and speedball, as well as some indoor options. Private land is also host to lots of paintball action, but it is much more dangerous as there is no supervision, and property owners must be careful of liability problems.

Paintball, like any activity people may participate in, has its dangers. Interestingly, though, it has fewer injuries among American players than most other sports. A few rules must be adhered to, and the game is much safer for all involved. The rules are basically common sense rules and are not different than regular gun safety rules. First, each player must always have safety goggles and a mask in place during gameplay. Second, a player's gun must not shoot paintballs at a speed faster than 300 feet per second. And, third, that barrel plugs always be in place when a player is not in the playing area. Barrel plugs are simple pieces which go in the end of the gun's barrel to keep the gun from firing accidentally at an inopportune time and in an unexpected direction.

In the event a player's goggles come off during gameplay, that player is to immediately lie face down wherever he is, protecting his eyes from potential damage. If someone sees another player in this prostrate position, he should immediately call for a cease fire so the player can safely get outside the playing area. Occasionally a player's goggles will get fogged up or covered with paint, in which case the player should yell "Fogged!" At this time another player or a referee should stop play and assist that player in reaching the safe area as well.

All in all, simple common sense and caution will make for a safe and enjoyable paintball game for all.
