Pillow Maintenance Tips

A newly purchased pillow should have a tag that includes washing instructions from the manufacturer, so look for that information. Most pillows are machine washable, but it’s a good idea to look at the tag anyway, and in any case, wash your pillows on a gentle cycle.

 

Dry your pillow on a low setting, and remember that a wet pillow is a breeding ground for mold, so make sure you dry your pillow completely. Even when it feels dry, make sure your pillow is fluffy and without clumps, as this means the interior of the pillow is completely dry. An alternative way to increase your pillow’s fluffiness is to dry it with a tennis ball.

 

Holes in your pillows not only allow filling to fall out, they also allow dust mites and other allergens to invade the inside of your pillow. The greater the thread count of a pillow, the less likely a pillow is to develop a hole, and once you have a pillow, use a pillow cover and pillowcase to protect the filling.

 

Pillow covers and pillowcases are the best way to take care of your pillows. After all, it’s much easier to wash a dirty pillowcase than it is to wash an entire stained pillow. In addition, the more layers you have around your pillow, the better protected the pillow will be from normal wear and tear.
