There are several types of mattresses to choose from. Comfort and personal preference will play the biggest role when choosing a mattress. The following is a list of the different mattress types:
· Innerspring Mattress: These mattresses are the most popular type of mattress sold. Innerspring mattresses have steel coils that are surrounded by layers of upholstery that provide support for your body. The upholstery layers of an innerspring mattress separate your body from the steel coils and provide cushioning and comfort.
· Pillow Top Mattress: Pillow tops are a popular choice when it comes to picking a mattress these days. Layers of soft foam, cotton, or wool are sewn onto the top of a mattress to make pillow tops. They come in a wide variety of firmness levels. The days of thinking that a mattress has to be hard to be any good are long gone and more and more people are turning to softer pillow tops for a good nights sleep.
· Foam Mattress: Foam mattresses are made with either a solid core of foam or layers of foam that are laminated together. Thanks to advancements made in foam technology, foam mattresses can provide considerable comfort and support.
· Air Mattress: Typically thought of as a mattress you pull out of the closet when company is coming, air mattress can also be used as your everyday mattress. Instead of an innerspring unit or foam core, air mattresses have air for their filling. They usually adjust well to individual sleepers needs.
· Futon Mattress: Futon mattresses allow you to use them as a couch as well as a mattress to sleep on. They are also great space savers. Because a futon mattress must be flexible they are typically made out of cotton, foam, and synthetic fibers.
· Water Mattress: In the past water mattresses were large pieces of heavy plastic filled with water and placed in a wooden frame. Today however water mattresses also known as water beds have a different design. They are now being made with a water filled core that provides support and upholstery placed around the water that provides comfort as well as insulation.
· Adjustable Mattress: These mattresses are great for people who are not able to move from a lying to a sitting position. Adjustable mattresses are electrical mattresses that change position with a hand control. They are also wonderful for those with back conditions.
