The foundation that a mattress is placed on is crucial not only to the comfort it provides but also to its support. A mattress and the foundation used are meant to work together as a set. The foundation is not only meant to support the overall comfort and support of a mattress it also takes on most of the stress and weight that comes along with nightly use, so in other words the wear and tear. Using the wrong foundation for your mattress can not only interfere in the overall feel of a mattress it can also invalidate your mattresses warranty. The two basic types of mattress foundations are:
·        Box Springs: Box springs are coiled bedsprings usually framed in wood and covered with fabric. Typically mattresses come either with a box spring or have one     that matches and is sold separately. If sold separately than the mattress you will generally pay $70 to $250 for a twin size box spring, $100 to $400 for a full box spring, $250 to $600 for queen and king size box springs, and $300 to $800 for a California king box spring. Using the right box spring with your mattress is important for many reasons. Different types of mattresses have certain box springs that are designed to fit them and that they work best with. Some mattresses that come with a warranty also have to be used with the accompanying box spring in order to validate the warranty.
·        Wooden Platform: This type of foundation is often used to enhance the design and décor of a bed as well as the comfort. They are usually made out of pine and have seven or eight support slats with a top layer consisting of either beaver or card board. There are certain types of mattresses that work best with wooden platforms. These mattresses shouldn’t be used with a box spring unit. Wooden platforms can be found starting at $300 in price and can up to $4,000.
