Using an Inflatable Bed

Most people will place their inflatable bed on the floor, but before you begin inflating your bed, spread it out in a location to make sure you have plenty of room. Sweep or vacuum the area directly under and around the bed so that there are no sharp objects that could puncture the mattress or dirt piles that the pump could suck into the mattress. Don’t put your inflatable bed near heaters, hot objects, or open flames, as most beds are not fire-retardant. Finally, if you have hardwood floors, you may want to put a blanket under the bed, as slight movement of the bed on hardwood can cause squeaks that sound very loud during the night.

Follow the inflation instructions for your specific inflatable bed, but be careful not to over-inflate the mattress. The best pumps will inflate the bed in just a few minutes, but it may need additional air the first time you inflate it. Make sure that the release valve is completely closed before you begin inflating. Once you inflate your mattress to the desired firmness, seal it, put normal sheets on it, and leave it alone until you want to go to bed.

A quality inflatable bed can provide a very comfortable night’s sleep, and, you can use it for several days as long as it is properly sealed. Most air mattresses will, however, lose some air during the night, so you may need to re-inflate it in the morning. You can leave pillows and sheets on the bed during re-inflation, but you should not be on the bed.

When you are ready to deflate your inflatable bed, again follow instructions for your specific model. Most manuals will instruct you to remove the pump or to open an air release valve.
