What type of futon should I purchase?

The type of futon you should purchase depends on the way you plan to use your futon. Do you plan to use your futon primarily as a bed or as a sofa? Will your futon regularly be used at all? Where will your futon be in your home? Your preferences should play a major role as you pick out your futon.

If you will primarily use your futon as a sofa, purchase a bi-fold futon, and if you plan to use it as a bed, either a bi-fold or a tri-fold should work. If you plan to use your futon as a long-term bed, however, it may be worthwhile to invest a little extra money in purchasing a quality mattress. A futon used primarily for a sofa, however, can have a slightly less luxurious mattress, so look to save some money. Overall, cotton/foam and cotton/polyester blend mattresses are best for everyday use.

An entire futon can cost anywhere from one hundred dollars to seven hundred dollars or more, but in many cases, you can buy the parts of your futon separately. Make sure that your frame is made of a durable wood, such as Southern yellow pine, your mattress is at least six inches thick, and that you are happy with your futon cover. Covers contribute to the atmosphere of your home, cost between $40 and $300, and come in traditional cloths as well as leather, denim, and more.

Finally, look for a quality futon with a quality warranty. Futons can last anywhere from two to fifteen years, so it’s a good idea to have at least a five year warranty. Before you purchase any futon, however, sit and lie on the futon for several minutes to see whether it is comfortable on it.
