The best way to keep your futon clean is to keep it from getting dirty, so make sure you protect your futon. If you will use your futon primarily as a couch, purchase a cover to protect dirt and liquids from reaching your mattress. These covers are thicker than a fitted sheet and are usually machine washable. If you will use your futon primarily as a bed, buy a mattress pad or a vinyl sheet for the same reason; you can put this pad beneath the fitted sheet.

Like any mattress, you should regularly flip and/or rotate your futon mattress to even out the wear on it. If you use your futon as a sofa, flip the mattress once a month, and if you use it as a bed, rotate the mattress every time you change the sheets.

Regardless of how you use your futon, air it out by hanging the mattress outside approximately twice a year. Vacuum your mattress if it gets dirty and use rug cleaner or a scrub brush, warm water, and laundry detergent to clean stains. Don’t let your futon get wet and don’t put damp clothes on the mattress, as the cotton in your mattress will absorb the moisture.

In many cases, your owner’s manual will include some cleaning tips, but you can also find helpful cleaning tips on the Internet. The Today’s Futons website, for example, has tips for cleaning nearly every type of stain. Go to: http://www.todaysfutons.com/futon-information/furniture-repair-tips.asp
