Shopping for a dorm room can quickly become an expensive proposition, but there are ways to save money. Before you even begin purchasing, however, make sure you know exactly what the school provides and what it allows. Many colleges prohibit holes in the wall, microwaves, candles, and more, in dorm rooms, so save money by not buying what you can’t have.

Next, make a list of what dorm room furniture you already have and can bring from home. For example, do your parents have an old bookshelf they want to get rid of? Then, make list of what furniture you do not have and rank the items based on their importance. Remember also that you do not have to have every item on the first day of school; you will likely accumulate as the year progresses.

You can save money by purchasing secondhand items. Garage sales, thrift shops, relatives, and friends all may offer perfectly functional items at a fraction of the cost. If you decide to go with new furniture, Target, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and Wal-Mart all market to the college crowd; simply be ready to fight heavy traffic in the aisles if you shop during moving weekend.

In addition, keep in mind what you will be able to carry up to your dorm room and fit inside the room. Measure the dimensions of stairwells, doorframes, and floor space and plan accordingly. Be creative in both maximizing space and decorating your room and remember that it’s only nine months; you don’t have to spend a lot of money.
