Assuming your dorm room comes with a bed, move on to consider what other large items you will want in your room. Decide how much you want to spend, and then choose and place these big items first, before filling in the gaps with smaller objects.
First of all, make sure you have a study spot in the room. If your dorm room does not already have a desk, you should buy or bring some sort of workstation. You want to be comfortable working, so it is also a good idea to bring a nice office chair from home if you have one. Finally, consider buying or bringing a bookshelf; you will have a lot of reading assignments in college, and you will be more motivated to read if your books are easily accessible on a bookshelf.
After all that work, however, make sure you have a comfortable place to sit as well. A sofa, recliner, or futon will help you relax after (or during) a hard day’s work. If you have a television, you will also probably want it to face the comfortable furniture.
In addition to a television, many college students want other appliances, such as a compact refrigerator and a microwave, to put in their dorm rooms. Assuming your school allows these items, you can usually find them at relatively inexpensive prices wherever you would purchase large appliances.
Finally, if your dorm room is not carpeted, purchase a large area rug and place it in the center of the room. Not only will a rug give your room more character, but it will also make your room feel warm in the wintertime and look clean all year.
