For many students, the hardest part of college is the roommate. You can, however, get your roommate with your relationship off to a good start if you coordinate well regarding dorm room furniture.
Contact your roommate during the summer to see what furniture each of you has and plans to bring so that you avoid doubling up on items such as refrigerators, televisions, rugs, and sofas. If you do need to buy items, decide whether one of you will pay for it or whether you split the cost. If you plan to split the cost, decide beforehand who will keep the item after you move out.
Once you get to the dorm, wait to set up your furniture until your roommate arrives. If you quickly pick a closet and a bed and decorate the room, your roommate may well feel that he/she has to adapt to your style and picks, and you have already sowed early seeds of frustration and conflict.
