A silk comforter is a warm and luxurious comforter option that is good for your allergies and lightweight. If you live in an especially cold climate, you may want a warmer comforter than silk during the winter, but otherwise, you should be able to use your silk comforter year round. The highest quality silk comforters are made of mulberry silk, but wild (tussah) silk is another option.
The disadvantages to silk comforters are their durability and cost. Even with the best care, silk comforters rarely remain in great shape more than ten years (unlike down comforters). In addition, they are more expensive than are down comforters, as silk comforters generally cost three hundred dollars or more.
As with down comforters, you should purchase a duvet cover to protect your silk comforter. Hopefully, you will only need to wash a silk comforter a few times, but when you do, only take it to a dry cleaner; do not attempt to wash or dry your silk comforter at home. These comforters are extremely delicate, so pay special attention to the manufacturer’s instructions on caring for your silk comforter.
