Comforters are both practical and decorative. First and foremost, comforters provide you with a thick layer of polyester, cotton, wool, down, or silk that keeps you warm as you sleep. At the same time, however, the color, pattern, and loft of a comforter give life to your bed and contribute to the atmosphere of your bedroom.
Comforters match the size of your bed, and if you purchase the correct comforter, it will hang considerably over the sides of your mattress. A twin mattress is thirty-eight inches by seventy-five inches, for example, but a twin comforter is sixty-eight inches by eighty-eight inches. Full/queen comforters (90” x 98”) and king comforters (108” x 98”) are also slightly larger than the mattresses they cover.
The warmth that a comforter provides depends on its fill power (the amount of material packed into the comforter) and its weight. As you would expect, the lighter a comforter is, the less warmth it provides, so use lighter comforters in areas or seasons with warmer weather.
If you want a soft, light, and durable comforter, look for comforters with a high thread count. As with sheets, comforters with high thread counts are generally both more expensive and more luxurious than are low thread count linens.
Finally, don’t forget to purchase a comforter with detail and decoration you enjoy. You can purchase comforters with all types of colors, designs, patterns, and fringes. Some comforters have different designs on each side, so you always have two designs from which to choose. Remember, however, that if you plan to purchase a duvet cover for your comforter, your comforter should be plain and your duvet cover should have the decoration you want.
