Sometimes the best bookcases weren’t even meant to be bookcases. An old wooden crate or medicine cabinet sometimes makes the best bookcases. Something that is a mainstay in farming communities is the old apple or milk crate. These sturdy wooden boxes when turned on their side make excellent small bookcases to be used in the bathroom or on the floor near a door. If you can find these boxes or bins in different sizes it makes for great diversity and brings a cool creativity to any room.
Almost more than the type of wood used for bookshelves is what is placed in the bookcases. As stated before people put all kinds of oddities in bookcases. Some people put keepsakes or trophies or computer software. Probably the best thing to put in a great bookcase is a great old book. There is just something about seeing a nice collection of old books nestled on a beautiful bookcase.
Some bookcases can stand alone, away from everything else. Other bookcases are made to be together as in a bookcase set in an office or a reference rack. There is virtually no end to the different uses of a bookcase. The use of a bookcase is based upon the homeowner’s creativity.
Bookcases also have different types of finishes. It is typical to find a bookcase that has a fine glossy stain finish on it. However, it is not uncommon to find bookcases that have no finish at all or they may a simple stain over rough-cut wood. In addition, still some bookcases don’t even have finishes. All these finishes are great and add character and depth to each bookcase.
Finally, a bookcase is a portal to other worlds and other times. You can sit in front of a bookcase and get lost in its contents. This, perhaps, is the best aspect about a bookcase; it has the ability to capture our thoughts, our memories and our dreams. A bookcase adds that certain depth that every room needs.
