Final Thoughts

It is hard to encapsulate exactly what a bookcase can do to a room. On the surface a bookcase is merely a handful of boards held together by woodscrews, glue and a few nails and maybe some dovetail joints. On the surface a bookcase will come in different shapes and different sizes, it may be enclosed or it may not. Either way it is still usable. The size and shape of a bookshelf depends solely on the need of the homeowner. Bookcases will do well in almost any room in the house.

Despite its many uses, and shapes and colors a bookcase will always be at home as the keeper of the books. Some people have a different bookcase for different kinds of literature: one for magazines, one for fiction, one for the classics and one for the children. Bookcases form to our liking and take on our personalities.

Remember not to fear the instructions from one of the big retailers. You have everything you need to put the bookcase together, just follow the directions and enjoy the process.

Finally, go out of your way to be creative with your bookcases. Sometimes instead of going out and grabbing the latest trendy bookcase, take a drive into the country and find an old antique shop. Look around the outside and see what you find. Among all the old tractor parts and old refrigerators you many find the perfect milk crate or medicine cabinet. For the price of a cheap hotdog and a nice drive in the country you could walk away with the most unique bookcase you have ever seen. When you finally get it home and clean it up, you will see that it was just the thing the room needed. It was just thing your old books needed. It was just thing you needed.

Never pass up the opportunity to uncover the perfect bookcase. One day you will sit in your home office, you will lean back and remember the drive and the hot dog and indigestion and nod in satisfaction and say, “There is nothing like a good old bookcase.”
