It is a professional standards organization with over 11,000 members nationwide. The Writers Guild of America runs the Writers Guild of America Script Registration service which is also available to non-members. The Writers Guild of America is split into two separate unions, the Writers Guild of America East and the Writers Guild of America West. Writers who live east of the Mississippi River belong to the east branch and writers who live to the west belong to the west branch.
Writers who work freelance do not have company benefits. The Writers Guild of America provides the health and pension benefits for its members. They also aid writers in registering their works and award the Writers Guild of American Awards.
