The majority of self-publishers began their business alone. This means that as the owner of a self-publishing company all responsibilities fall on your shoulders.
The first and foremost among the responsibilities is the writing of your works. This is the foundation of your business and your book should be well written and well researched as to the competition among other books. Your book also needs to be edited and it is not recommended for an author to perform final edits on their own works. Find someone who can help with this task, if at all possible. Many self-publishers also illustrate their own books. If you elect to have someone else illustrate your works, stay involved in the process.
As the owner of your self-publishing company, you are responsible for all of the financial aspects of a company. You must be the bookkeeper and accountant. Keep good records of all business transactions for tax purposes.
Most self-publishing companies begin out of the author’s home. It is imperative that you check with your local business licensing agencies to inquire as to the legalities of operating a business out of your home. Obtain a post office box so that you have a different address for your company than for your home. After your business begins to grow, you may be forced to move to a commercial office.
One of the first considerations for your business is a name. It is advisable that you include the words publishing company, books, or publishers in the name so that people will be clear on the type of company you are operating. It is also recommended that you do not include any part of your own name or the name of your book in the name of the company as this causes you to appear to be a very small firm. Once you have decided on the name of the company, research to be sure there is not already a company out there with the same name.
