Setting Up a Work Space

While it is true that a writer can work from most anywhere, it is helpful to have a dedicated work space from which to work. Many writers rent a work space outside of their homes so that they can limit their distractions, but most writers work from the comfort of their own home. You may have to be a little creative in finding a work space, but the main thing is to find an area that is available during the hours that you plan to write. Determine what type of space is most conducive to your particular writing style. Do you need peace and quiet to be able to focus on your writing? If so, and you plan to work at night while the family is at home, the dining room table or family room is probably not the best place to write. If you are more concerned with feeling as if you are still part of the family while working, you won’t want to be stuck in a back bedroom.

If you have a dedicated work space that closes off from the rest of your home, you are more likely to be able to claim that space on your taxes as a home office.

Select a desk and chair that are comfortable because you are going to be spending a great deal of time sitting at your desk while working.
It is important to have room to spread out books, notes, files, articles, and other research materials. Choose a chair that offers good back support and an arm rest.

Make sure that you have good lighting in the area in which you will be writing.
