The following are a few pieces of equipment you will need to run your freelance writing business.

• Computer - Your most important business investment should be your personal computer. You will want to get the best computer that you can afford as you will be using it on a daily basis. The computer needs to include a monitor, modem, and printer. Most computers come with some type of word processing software. Microsoft Word is the most used software by writers and publishers.
• Printer – Many computers come bundled with a printer but if yours does not, you will want to invest in a high-quality laser or inkjet printer. Another option is an all-in-one printer that includes a copier and fax machine.
• Fax Machine – Many printers are combination printer, copier, and fax machines. If yours is not, you will want a fax machine for corresponding with editors.
• Internet Connection –The convenience of being able to research topics online and e-mail make the Internet a must have for every writer. There are two types of connections: dial-up and high-speed, with high-speed being the preferable Internet connection. Your computer will most likely have a built-in modem, which allows you to access your Internet service provider through your telephone line. There are several service providers from which you can choose such as SBC, AOL, Cox, and EarthLink.
• Telephone – You will need to have a telephone close to your computer in order to conduct interviews by phone. A speakerphone or headset for your phone can be very handy during phone interviews, as they allow you to be hands-free. This enables you to take notes or look up information on your computer while you are talking. To ensure that you have uninterrupted phone calls while working, you may want to consider a second phone line that is dedicated to your business. The second line is a business expense deduction.
