There are a great number of strategies for overcoming writer’s block. Of course, what works for one person may not work for another. It is important that you try various techniques until you find one that is effective for you.
Suggested techniques are as follows:
• Relaxation helps to clear the mind for writing. This can be done in the form of yoga, massage, or consciously relaxing the body’s muscles.
• Find a quiet environment in which to sit quietly and lower your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and reduce the speeds of your metabolisms.
• Aromatherapy in the form of scented candles or warmed oils can help to fight stress and mental fatigue. Lavender and citrus scents are known to help you relax.
• Set a time to write and write whatever comes to mind in that time without stopping.
• Spark creativity by going somewhere new or experiencing something different.
• Try writing at different times and in different places.
• Make a habit of keeping pen and paper close by to jot down ideas as they come to you.
• Keep a journal and review for story ideas.
• Start with an outline and then take each topic in the outline and expand upon it.
• Wander through bookstores and the library looking through books and magazines for ideas.
• Get plenty of sleep so your mind is fresh.
• Find the time of day that works best for you to write. Some people work best first thing in the morning while others are much better in the afternoon or evening.
• Be sure to stop and have a snack or lunch while writing. It is important to stay nourished or your mind won’t work properly.
• Talk into a tape recorder and go back and listen for ideas.
• Don’t let your mind convince you that you aren’t capable of writing. Stay positive and believe in yourself.
• Take a short walk to clear your head. Preferably by yourself or with a pet.
• Getting plenty of exercise not only relaxes your mind but relaxes your muscles which can become cramped and achy from sitting at your computer all day. Yoga, Pilates, riding a bike, and group exercise are all ways in which you can get exercise and relax your mind and body.
• Try to avoid distractions. When working from home you can easily become distracted by phone calls, visits from friends, the television, and housework. Set aside time that is just for working so that you are not constantly stopping to take care of other responsibilities.
• Write about your writer’s block. Express what you are feeling and it may just get your juices flowing again.
