Writer’s block may have many causes but all blocked writers share the same problem of despite being intellectually capable of doing so, they do not write, and they suffer because of their inability to write.
A person who believes they have nothing interesting to say can internalize until they develop a true case of writer’s block. Writer’s block tends to restrict itself to one type of writing. While you may not be able to write a book, a poem may flow fluently.
On the average, studies show that people are less productive and creative in the winter months. It has been determined that creative works peak in the early fall with a smaller peak in the spring. There are also people who are more sensitive to day lengths. The short days of autumn can trigger depression which leads to the inability to write. Feelings of depression, grief, stress, or pain can all lead to the inability to write and these mental deterrents should be dealt with before attempting to get back into writing.
It is important to be aware that in some cases, writer’s block has lead to alcoholism. Many writers use alcohol to help themselves write, claiming that it calms their anxieties. While this may work for a time, eventually the writing will suffer because of the alcohol. This in turns leads to additional drinking because as the writing suffers, the writer drinks even more alcohol. There have been well known writers who have become alcoholics because of their belief that they were no longer able to write.
