Paris was founded by the Celtic Parisii who settled by the Seine River in order to control the river commerce in 250 BC. In 52 BC the area was conquered by Rome and built a city they named Luteria. The area grew quickly and toward the end of the Roman’s rule the name of the city was changed back to Paris.

The middle ages were a time of great change for Paris. The city defended itself from an overtaking by the Vikings during the 9th century. However the city’s Left Bank was damaged during the battles with the Vikings. After that time the city continued to grow so much so that marshes were drained in order for Paris to expand in the area of the Right Bank.

In 1200 the University of Paris was established and it brought visitors to the city from all over Europe. This time marked substantial growth for Paris. The Left Bank area became an educational area with several universities established there and the Right Bank became an area for commerce as well as trade.
