The French typically appreciate the activities of the mind. The French Revolution began in response to the Enlightenment, a period in history when the absolute rule of the monarchy began to be questioned and common people used reason and intellect to combat the royals. The French value artists, musicians, and writers, more so than sports stars or celebrities. They are proud of the contributions their ancestors made to the arts, and the French display them heartily, evidenced by the emphasis on museums throughout the country.

The French are Catholic in name, but in name only, and the number of practicing Catholics is actually quite small. There is a marked separation between church and state, and it is fiercely guarded and maintained. Religion is considered quite private, and it is typically not culturally acceptable to speak to others about their faith.
