Located in the northwestern portion of the country, this is the place to go to visit the famous castles of France. There are over 300 hundred in the region. The area was home to French nobility, until Louis IV picked up his court and moved them to his new home at Versailles. After the nobles were situated in Paris, they continued to use the Loire Valley castles as summer homes. Now, the majority of their castles operate as hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and homes available for tour. The government operates some of them as major tourist attractions.
Tours operates as the central city in the Loire Valley. It is a good place to anchor if you plan on visiting the area. Some of the nearby villages include Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau, Amboise, and Blois.
