The Pyrenees Mountains form Spain and France’s border, and the region at its feet (on the France side, of course) is the Basque Country. The area boasted resorts for the rich and famous in the 19th century. Biarritz is one of the most well known. It was a favorite of Empress Eugénie. Later, Queen Victoria and her son, Edward VII, enjoyed vacations here. Other members of the British monarchy contributed to Biarritz’s popularity in the 1930s when the Prince of Wales and his divorcee wife, Wallis Simpson made it a desirable place to holiday.
The most famous city in the Atlantic Coast is Bordeaux, another of the famous wine-producing towns. Others include Cognac and Sauternes, famous for the fact that they produce the spirits that bear their names.
