Because bathrooms are such high-traffic areas of the house and are exposed to so much water, it’s important to wash the tile on your walls and floors regularly. Commercial cleaners work fine for regular washings. Use a cloth to wipe down the walls with a cleaning solution, and mop the floors regularly.

To help prevent mold and mildew, ventilate the bathroom as much as possible, especially after showers so the moisture doesn’t get trapped in a small space. If mildew does occur, a chlorine-based cleanser will help remove mildew stains.

The grout between bathroom tiles, whether on a wall or on the floor, is especially prone to collecting dirt and grime and can look especially unattractive. While regular wiping of the walls and mopping of the floors can help, sometimes you might need a stronger weapon in your arsenal. Commercially available steam vapor kits focus streams of hot steam onto the grout to remove stains. For especially tough grout stains, you may have to break down and remove the old grout, and replace it with fresh, new grout. This undertaking isn’t the easiest, but it isn’t the hardest either—and just might be your best bet for cleaning up mold and mildew stains in your bathroom.
