What should I do about a rug backing?

To slip or not to slip, that is the question. There are definitely both pros and cons when it comes to whether or not you decide on a non-skid backing for your bath rug. Here are some things to consider about the under-side of your bath rug:

·        Rugs with a non-slip backing – If this is the option you are leaning toward, then you want to be on the lookout for word descriptors like: grippy latex backing, textured reverse, waffle-textured reverse, latex backing, or simply – a non-skid backing. The pros of a non-skid backing are pretty obvious – it keeps the rug in place and prevents you from an accidental fall if the rug were to slip out from under you. A con of this option can be that the backing doesn’t allow for adequate water evaporation which can leave your rug wet for a longer than desirable time. Another con can come in the care of the rug – non-slip backings tend to smell like burnt rubber when run through the dryer. They can also crack after time.

·        Rugs without a non-slip backing – The main pro of this option is that these rugs tend to be reversible. This is nice in that it prolongs the time between washings – when one side begins looking a bit ragged, simply flip it over. You can go twice as long before you wash it. The major con can be the possibility of falling if your rugs doesn’t hold steady on the floor. Reviewers say this is more of a problem on tile floors than other types and it can be remedied with the use of a non-slip pad to keep the rug in place.
