» Tips for decorating with area rugs
- Use an area rug to define a smaller area within a large room. For instance, an area rug can create an intimate seating area when placed under a coffee table and surrounded by a sofa and chairs. It can have a similar effect in front of a fireplace.
- If the color scheme in a room is fairly neutral, consider adding some interest with a patterned rug. But if a room already is busy with loud colors and patterns, a more neutral and simple rug will complement the room better.
- While some designers do not recommend placing area rugs over carpeting, others do advise it, particularly in high traffic areas. This will minimize wear and tear on your carpet and add design interest.
- Consider the décor you are trying to create with your area rug. Braided rugs, for instance, create a farmhouse look, while an Oriental rug can instantly make a room more sophisticated.
