Area rugs come in so many shapes, sizes and materials that it is almost guaranteed you will find one that suits your style and purpose. You can use an area rug to define a room’s décor and set a tone. You can use an area rug to protect carpet or hardwood floors in a high-traffic area. Or you can use an area rug to soften a hard floor.

Whatever the purpose you intend for your area rug, it’s important to know what you are looking for so you end up making a purchase you will not regret. Asking yourself some of these questions could help you to determine what kind of area rug will best suit your needs:

  • What is the location you have in mind for your area rug?
  • What will its primary function be (define a space, protect flooring, soften a space, absorb moisture and dirt at an entryway, etc.)?
  • How much foot traffic will it receive?
  • What is the décor of the room where it will be (modern, traditional, antique, farmhouse, formal, casual, etc.)?
  • What is the color scheme of the room where it will be?
  • How much money would you like to spend on your area rug?
  • How long would you like your area rug to last?

Once you have a sense of what you are looking for, it’s time to set out to find it.
