The waters surrounding the Falkland Islands are rich with squid and fish. In 1986 a Conservation and Management Zone was created to manage the resources. The resource is predominantly squid. Illex squid, which is fished mainly by Far Eastern vessels, and Loligo squid, which is caught by Falkland Islands flagged trawlers and marketed primarily in Italy and Spain. The waters around the Falklands also contain significant stocks of Blue Whiting, Hake, and Hoki. Since the value of the Illex squid is very high, poaching can occur. The Government of the Falklands operates two Fishery Protection Vessels and also deploys Britten Norman Islander aircraft to police the fishery.
