Weddell Island is the third largest of the Falkland Islands. It was once known as Swan Island. The name Weddell Island came from the name of James Weddell, an English explorer who visited here in the early 1800s. The small population of people of the island lives in Weddell Settlement on the east coast. The remainder of the island is run as a sheep farm. Weddell is also known for its wildlife which includes penguins, sea lions, and dolphins. Exotic wildlife like skunks, rheas, parrots, guanacos, Patagonian foxes, and sea beavers were introduced in the 1930s and they can still be found on the island.
