There is no dress code when it comes to yoga, but there are some apparel choices and guidelines you will want to follow in order to stay comfortable while performing poses.
· Yoga pants/shirts: The rule with yoga apparel is to wear what is breathable, comfortable, and allows you to get free range of motion. Consider wearing pants that are loose enough to allow for the stretching that is involved in yoga. It is also recommended that women pick a top that supports them. You can simply wear a supportive bra (no under wire) underneath your top or opt for built in sports bra tank. You will want to find clothes that fit you well so there will be no need to worry about things riding up or down while in the poses. After all, one of the essential keys of yoga is concentration and the last thing you want is to be worrying about whether your shirt is falling up during an inverted pose! There are hundreds of companies and stores that provide all sorts of yoga pants and shirts. Just make sure you buy for comfort and not just for fashion.
· Socks: Yoga is generally done barefoot, but there are socks available for those who chose to wear them. Mostly, people want socks to prevent picking up germs from gym provided mats. Yoga sock are just like regular socks with a traction-enhanced sole to keep you from slipping and sliding.
· Gloves: Gloves are used in yoga to once again, protect against injury from slipping. Yoga gloves give traction to tired, sweaty hands and also protect against germs found on the mats. They are typically made with cotton and lycra and stretch to fit many hand sizes.
