When it comes to the size of the wheels on your jogging stroller, the bigger usually means better! Bigger wheels mean smoother rides for baby and less rolling resistance which makes them easier to push. Bigger wheels are best for serious runners who run on rough terrain. They can take curbs, steps and bumps much easier than smaller wheels and offer the stroller a better glide-ability. If you feel that you will only be using your jogging stroller on smooth sidewalks, then smaller wheels may perform adequately for you and are actually easier to turn.
There are three main wheel diameters that are sold on the majority of jogging strollers: 12-inch, 16-inch and 20-inch.
o 12-Inch Wheels: These wheels are best for shopping trips and recreational walking on smooth surfaces. Since these wheels are smaller they probably will swivel, which makes them easier to steer where you want them to go. Although some regular strollers offer 12” wheels, it may still be worth purchasing a jogging stroller because of its superior design.
o 16-Inch Wheels: This size of wheel is a “happy medium” for most stroller users since you get a good balance between functionality and a smooth ride. These wheels are the best size for parents who will be using their stroller for frequent walking or light jogging, with some off-road use, and are still quite manageable for shopping around town.
o 20-Inch Wheels: These wheels are the best fit for the serious runner who may run off-road frequently on trails or over curbs or even steps. The large wheels give the pusher a great gliding feeling while the large wheels absorb bumps much better than the smaller wheels.
Size is not the only consideration for choosing the right wheels. You will also want to purchase wheels that are rust-resistant, or wheels made of aluminum or alloy. Although these materials are more expensive up front, they will prevent you from having to replace wheels down the road from rust. This is especially important if you live in areas with humid climates, areas that get a lot of snowfall or rain and coastal areas.
